MappleStory Thief Edition game reviews for iphone

MappleStory Thief Edition game reviews for iphone

In the game, players go through MapleWorld, a universe filled with monsters. As you play and gain experience, you develop more strengths. You can also talk to other people, trade, band together and play mini-games. Lots of people gang up to hunt monsters together, making it a social happening. So now you can play this on your iphone or ipad as well! (I recommend using a tablet) In the iphone version, MapleStory Thief edition you get to be either a thief or an assassin. (I always wanted to be an assassin)

Once you’ve picked a character you go off into MapleWorld and it’s pretty much the same as the online version, just lacks the interaction, which, to me, seemed the whole point!
Then again: as it’s temporarily free, this game’s a real steal….

Amoveo application review for iphone

Amoveo application review for iphone

To begin with the app offers no explanation on how to use it. In fact there isn’t even a title screen or info box. The app simply drops you on a list of six categories of themes like romance, travel, or holidays. Tapping one of the categories lets you preview and choose a theme to use for the slideshow. Up to this point I would say that Amoveo has succeeded in creating a no fuss minimal interface that would be easy to use by even iOS beginners. Not need for instructions here.

Once we reach the step where you must choose that photos that will go in the slideshow is where hte interface takes the “less is more” mantra a little too far. You see it gives you a list of all your photos, from oldest to newest, and offers no way to search, divide, or to otherwise narrow down your search. With thousands of photos in my iPhone it becomes quite a chore to search out for the particular ones I want, especially since the newer photos are on the bottom of the list. That annoyance aside, you can choose seven photos to include in the slideshow aand they will be shown in the order you select them.
Once you tap the last photo it immediately jumps to a progress bar as it generates your video slideshow. I hope you didn’t tap the wrong photo. Once it is finished, the video will play so you can see how it turned out. There are a variety of transitions for the photos and the animation and music are generally well laid out and fit with the various themes. Once the video is done you can then preview it again or share it; which will let you save the video to your camera roll, or share it on Facebook or Youtube. If you realize you made a mistake you have to tap the steps at the top to return to the photo picker and choose your photos again.

Amoveo has many good points and I can see many less savvy users making good use of the simple design. I think the interface goes a little too far at times and results in making it difficult to make changes, but overall the app does a good job of giving you a video slideshow you can send to you friends or relatives. I would recommend this app to anyone that finds Apple’s iMovie app a little too much for them to handle. You can download it currently for $2.99 at the app store.

ContactsXL 3+ Sync with Facebook application review for iphone and ipad

ContactsXL 3+ Sync with Facebook application review for iphone and ipad

A look at the ContactsXL one shows that it is not much more than a different interface for dealing with your iPhone’s contacts. Sure there was groups and birthday reminder, but there wasn’t anything compelling to drag me away from the iOS’s contacts. With version three however, it opens many interesting opportunities for those that have a sizable number of Facebook contacts. Once you have authorized ContactsXL it allows you to view your friends on Facebook and even import them into your iOS contacts. Once missing feature is that the app can not see Facebook groups. I was hoping to sort and import from groups of friends I have set up on Facebook. This becomes especially important when you have hundreds of contacts and not all of them are ones you want in your iPhone.

With so many contacts it can become difficult to manage them and while the iOS contacts do have groups, they are not manageable from the iOS device. ContactsXL most useful feature has to be the addition of both standard and smart groups. You can sort and organize your contacts into whatever sets of groups best fit your needs, but I think the best way is to set up smart groups, which uses a set of criteria to auto-populate a group. This way, whenever new contacts are added they will automatically be assigned to the appropriate group. Facebook and regular contacts can be assigned and You can have as many smart groups as you like. With these groups you can send out group texts or emails.

While many people are more than happy with the iOS’s built in contacts, there are those that require a bit more control and with Facebook integration and syncing ContactsXL looks like just the tool for the job. ContactsXL has a lite version that lacks the Facebook parts, but the full version is only $.99 so it shouldn’t be much of a risk to give this app a try and see if it helps you manage your communications better.

Twtio Audio Recording application review for iphone, ipad

Thanks to this great new app called Twtio, you can! Just go to the website, record whatever you want and then post it to all your friends on Twitter. yes, it’s that simple! It’s very easy to use, the interface is brilliant, because it’s so easy to see where you’re going, I really couldn’t fault this app. And they have a great competition planned, a quest to find the Greatest Sound on Earth, and you could win an iPad2.

So imagine you’re getting married, and you record the “I do” and then you could tweet it to the world. Or you’re at Wimbledon, and you capture the sound of the winning roar. A lark singing, the engine of your new car, or simply “see you at the meeting tomorrow at 5!”, the options are ENDLESS: this is a really cool app, and it’s free, so go for it!

MelAPP application reviews for iphone,ipad

Health Discovery Corporation (OTCBB: HDVY) is a molecular diagnostics company which has come up with the MelApp. This little app will help you tell whether your freckle or mole is just that or the beginning of something sinister. It’s quite a high tech app, that uses pattern recognition and mathematical algorithms. The app is linked to the Johns Hopkin’s cancer research library. The system they use is called ABCDE, which stands for Asymmetry, Border, Color, Diameter and Evolution. These factors put together will help you decide whether you need to go see a doctor. Simply snap a quick pic of your mole or freckle and within seconds you’ll know!

I’m not sure about these things. I’m sure they did their research and this is in principle a great app. But what if you are on a sunny beach and decide to take a quick snapshot and suddenly find you have cancer? No support system, no doctor to explain what the next steps are, or how you may be able to treat it. I think the panic caused by such an app could be considerably worse than its advantages. Still, so many people are unaware of the dangers that any way of getting more people to check their moles etc is a great thing. Still, in the words of the great Baz Luhrman: “Use sunscreen”!

Lost Monsters game review for iphone, ipad

All the monsters have disappeared and you have to bring them home to their families! To catch them, you have to slide and be quick! Basically, at $0.99, it’s the hottest new tile match game in the app store. You can use the bombs to blow up the boards, combo moves unlock even more bombs.

What I’m missing, but I’m guessing I may be the only one, is a logical story. So there are these pet monsters and they’ve just packed up and left for no apparent reason. And their families want them back. If we don’t fix the reason they left in the first place (ill treatment? dietary issues? Like “Don’t feed them after dark”?) won’t they just leave again?

Anyway, maybe let’s not over-think this, the game itself is quick and snappy, controls work really well, the music is catchy and overall it’s rather an addictive game. Even if I’m not sure WHY we’re off catching these monsters….. And they sure are cute! (so maybe that’s why?)
This is their own trailer on Youtube. It’s kinda hard to follow because the letters are gone before you can read them, but it gives you a good general idea:

VirusBarrier application review for iphone,ipad

Because of the sandbox, you can’t scan the file system,” Intego spokesman Peter James told Computerworld.com, “Since you don’t see the iOS file system, the only things you can scan are attachments sent by email or files in, say, your Dropbox folder.”

So basically, if the virus is inside the app, Virus Barrier cannot trace it, but if it’s in an attachment, like a pdf, pdf being the big security hole in Apple devices at the moment, it can. Also, it will be possible to stop your device from spreading it around. A word of caution: Intego also make malware defenses for MAC, which are notoriously impossible to deinstall, so I’d be a bit careful before installing this.

American Ball game review for iphone and ipad

American Ball game review for iphone and ipad

It’s basically a carnival game, you have to throw a ball in a hole/circle and each hole gives you a different score. You only get nine throws per turn though, so you have to make the most of them. The higher your score, the more tickets you get, and this is where the game comes to its own.

At carnivals, if you hit a certain amount of points, you get a stuffed pink teddy bear or a lighter shaped as a guy on a horse (yes, I remember that lighter fondly, I wonder what happened to it?). Here you get tickets, and with those tickets you can buy stuff to spruce up your personal game lobby. So for instance you can put down carpets, prettier ceilings and all kinds of other fixtures. Mind you: you have to go back to the beginning to get all this stuff, and you may not succeed on your first go. However, there was something very rewarding at putting a clock on my wall.

All in all, carnivals are about the atmosphere, cotton candy and the tat you can win. American Ball provides the tat, and quite a bit of 3D atmosphere. Now if only they could give me some candy… As it’s completely free, I’d just give it a go.

Seattle Cocktail Compass application for iphone, ipad reviews

The Seattle Cocktail Compass doesn’t work quite as well if you’re not in, say, Seattle, but it’s inspiring anyway!

The app shows every happy hour in town, and adds what else is on offer at that place: dancing, billiards, air conditioning… You can easily call ahead to these places from within the app and you can add the ones you like, or a re saving for next time, to favorites. This app is wonderful if you’re new to town, or looking to try something different. And it even helps you to find a cab when you’re ready to go home….

I love this app. There’s only one obvious flaw: if they haven’t come to your city yet, it’s of no use whatsoever. Cocktail Compass is on the move though: The app has moved on from Seattle to Boise, NYC, Portland, Pittsburg, Charleston, Raleigh and Little Rock, which is a vast improvement. So when are they coming to Europe????

Captain America sentnel of library game reviews of ipad and iphone

Captain America sentnel of library game reviews of ipad and iphone

Captain America sentinel of liberty runs (and runs) through 24 levels fighting the evil forces of HYDRA, but the controls are sluggish and gameplay is kinda dull…..

Captain America sentinel of liberty is all about fighting: you can throw your shield at the bad guys, or clobber them, or kick their lights out. All good and gameplay is fluent. Along the way there are all kinds of hazards, such as booby traps and bombs and trip lasers that send in more bad guys. What I thought was kinda funny is that you can earn extra outfits for The Captain (is it me or is that less than masculine?). There are three locations, and each location has eight different levels. If you want to get all the loot you’ll probably have to revisit levels, which can be a teensy weensy bit tedious.

A few people have already remarked that this game looks an awful lot like the Mirror’s Edge app, which at the game’s original price of $4.99 may make you feel like you’re being ripped off just a little bit. Also it’s great they hired an actor to say the Captains lines but couldn’t they have given him more? And why doesn’t the game have the remotest ting to do with the movie? That would’ve been fun, right? Actually, even at the current 80% discount I still say: BORING.

BBC iplayer application for iphone and ipad

With this app you can watch live BBC TV (all four channels!) and listen to live BBC radio (there are like a thousand stations). You can make a list of your favorite shows and they’ll be added to your playlist as soon as they air. To add favorite shows, simply drag and drop them into your fave list. Easy as pie! The app also features a TV guide so you can browse and see what else is on.

Apparently, according to The Guardian, the app will be available in Canada, Australia and the US later this year, but until then it will be available in 11 European countries, including Belgium, Germany, Italy, Spain, France and The Netherlands. The BBC says it’s a pilot for 1 year. The app is free to download, but in order to watch anything you need a subscription, which comes to 6.99 euros a month or 49.99 a year. Personally, I am very excited and will download asap!

Free Music Download application for iphone and ipad

Free Music Download Pro claims that not only are they free (well, apart from the app, which you have to buy at a rather stiff $4.99 which isn’t free by a long chalk in my book), they are also legal. Really? How did they manage to squeeze past Bono? Well, here’s what they do: (and watch this space, they probably won’t be doing it for much longer!): they just link you to websites with links to free music.

The app itsself has NO music at all. Which brings us to a big issue with this app: the websites they link to aren’t, at all, suited to mobile. so it looks like crap and it’s difficult to use. Even worse: after you’ve waded through endless popups and sign up screens, the downloads often don’t work on iphone. And if by lucky chance you manage to download a song, you can only listen to it WITHIN the app, you cannot add it to your library!

This app is a complete waste of time, please stay away from it!

PictureShow application for iphone and ipad

PictureShow actually delivers on that lomography, analog, nostalgic look. PictureShow just has so many more options as well! The randomizer in Hipstamatic is a nice touch, but the filters and settings are so subtle I hardly notice the difference. Not so with PictureShow! Wow. IndigoHalo, Cinema, multi exposure black & white, they’re all cool!

I bought Hipstamatic and then forked out another $1.99 for their Swankolab after effects, which I also found just a little disappointing. I’ve been toying with PictureShow all day, and I haven’t had pictures this cool ever.

Speech Notes application for iphone and ipad

Speech Notes application for iphone and ipad

I love apps that put spoken words into text, if only for their entertainment value, because these babies make a LOT of funny mistakes as well.

Such as somehow turning ‘plethora’ (trust me, that’s not a word I use often) into ‘sturgis restaurant’. I know, it’s not quite as funny as ‘penis’, but it’s weird to say the least. For a free app it actually works pretty well. Apart from the ‘plethora’ thing (and, let’s face it, that’s not a word anyone should use) it got most of what I said down pat. It’s default setting is English, but it also supports Czech, Danish, German, Dutch, English, Finnish, French, Italian, Polish, Portuguese, Russian, Spanish and Ukrainian.

Big downside? Huge even? There’s no way to export your notes! That really sucks! They should set up a connection with Dropbox or Google docs or anything. At the very least an option to email the notes to yourself.
So all in all, even though it’s free, this is definitely not the best speech app, so I’ll keep looking and hoping someone will get it right!

The ESV Bible application for iphone and ipad

The ESV Bible application for iphone and ipad

The ESV bible app is a good option as it’s free, not bogged down by ads and it’s very user friendly. It opens to all the bible books, divided by Old Testament and New Testament, you can scroll through the separate books and within the books the separate chapters. As it’s the English Standard Version, it only offers English as a language, so if you’re looking for another language this definitely isn’t the app for you.

It doesn’t offer a reading plan and it doesn’t allow you to share notes or thoughts with friends or family, which is a shame. As it’s free, and they want to spread the word, they don’t have the funds to do too much on development, but they have promised to make it more interactive, making it possible to share notes and thoughts.

Crazy Miner Bob game for iphone and ipad

Crazy Miner Bob game for iphone and ipad

Crazy Miner Bob used to live a normal life as a regular guy, but he got caught by gold rush and now he spends his time digging for gold. I’ll tell you straight up that I absolutely adore this game. It’s not that hard to play, you can get started without any tutorials, and the level of difficulty just increases at exactly the right pace. You grab the gold, as if you’re in an arcade digging for stuffed bunnies and fake gold watches, and you have to reach a certain level of points before you’ve cleared the level. You can grab the rocks as well to score extra points. After a few starter levels, things get more complex because there’s this pesky mouse that keeps trying to steal your gold, so you have to be quick and grab him! That is until he cottons on and starts wearing a little helmet…

Cute and addictive is how I’d sum up Crazy Miner Bob. There are so many violent games out there, even Angry Birds is about well, angry birds and stealing. This is so innocent and I just love the banjo music, very apt (and I’m still humming).
Definitely worth getting, especially if you want to play with kids and don’t want them to play too many violent games.

Lockitze your lock screen application for iphone and ipad

Lockitze your lock screen application for iphone and ipad

Lockitze your lock screen is not, as you might expect, some sort of security app. Lockitize, instead, is like putting a sign ‘beware of the dog’ when all you have is a gold fish. Perceived security, without any of the hassle such as feeding and walking a dog, or in the case of an iPhone, remembering a code of some sort to protect your iPhone from prying eyes or theft. So you can add a finger print scanner to your screen or a device specific security screen.

I think this is a total waste of money. Why the hell would anyone pay a dollar for what is no more than a wall paper app? Well, apparently, there are loads of idiots out there. Don’t buy this!

Pimp your iphone and ipad screen application

Pimp your iphone and iphone screen application

There are literally hundreds of apps to choose from if you want to pimp your device, but as always it’s hard to find a really good one. And, to get to the point: Pimp your screen is a good one. It’s not free, and I guess that helps, and it’s also massively popular. With good reason. Usually these pimp-things are cheap and crappy. A couple of topless girls to set as a screen saver, that kind of stuff. Pimp your screen actually comes up with original and well designed screens and shelves and even some fun stuff to make your icons look more ‘you’ with icon skins (I hadn’t come across those before, personally, and I think they’re a nice touch).

All in all, this app does what it says on the box: it makes your smart phone different and more you. The designs are well thought through, not tacky and heap, and it’s dead easy to use.

Pixlr-o-matic application for iphone and ipad

The app started it’s life as a Chrome web app and has just recently made it’s way to iPhone and iPad. Once you open the app, you get to pick a picture from your camera, or your computer, or simply snap a new one. Then you get to pick from about 20 differnet filters, called ‘Agatha’ and ‘Tom’ and “Salomon’. Once you have picked your level of retro blurriness, you can even add a frame, so you can make it look like a Polaroid or a painting, etc. For now, it’s only available on iPhone, but the development team behind pixlr-o-matic has promised to get one for Android out soon.

Only downside? The resolution is too low to result in really beautiful pictures, but that seems to me to be something quite easily resolved in an update. All in all, great little app, very easy to use, hours of fun, good companion to hipstamatic, and did I mention that it’s free?

Fitness Buddy application for ipad and iphone

Fitness Buddy application for ipad and iphone

Fitness Buddy boasts over a 1000 exercises with photos and animations. It’s also very easy to use. The menu consists of Overview, Exercises, Workouts, Music Player and More. Exercise divides all those different exercises divided in muscle group. Each of them comes with lavish examples and pictures of how to do them. If you press the plus you can fill out your weight and height and it also includes a timer. It also has 45 complete workouts, which address all your muscle groups. Some involve kettle balls or resistance bands, and there are also goal specific workouts.

Oddly enough, the app doesn’t have any social media integration, which is a shame and gives it a old fashioned feel. Competition is such a stimulant when you’re doing boring situps or push ups etc, so if you could at least shout about it on Twitter & Facebook, that would have been great. Other than that: this is a good app and it’s on sale at the moment, with a 50% discount!

Sleep Cycle alarm clock application for iphone and ipad

Sleep Cycle alarm clock application for iphone and ipad

Sleep Cycle says it will wake you up when your sleep is at its lightest, which should make it easier to wake up.

It’s an interesting concept, that works by monitoring your movement. The more you move, the lighter you’re sleeping. It tries to avoid waking you up during your REM sleep, which is the most important part of your sleep cycle. It’s rather a brilliant idea: say you want to wake up at 7 in the morning (yikes), then this app will start tracking your movement to pick the best moment to wake you.

Actually, if you are going to have to wake up at some ungodly hour, this is a pretty cool app to do it with. It’s easy to use and it wakes you up in a way that makes you feel like you were already awake, even if it was just a little. App also keeps track of your sleeping pattern which can be quite useful if you’re having trouble sleeping. All in all, at $0.99, this is a pretty neat app!

Meteoric Download Manager for iphone and ipad

Meteoric Download Manager for iphone and ipad

It does pretty much what it says on the box, it helps you download files and then manages your files for you. It has accelerated donwloads, you can queue, pause, resume and refetch. It’s not a bad browser either.
It also features Dropbox integration (which is great, as half my life is in Dropbox these days) and Firefox sync, which means you keep the same open tabs and bookmarks as on your laptop (I’m pretty excited about that, as my lazy butterfingers hate typing urls I’ve already typed in). The app also comes with its own built-in media player that will play MP3 files stored inside the app. I bet Apple is loving this. The user can even create a web server via downloads module and stream all their files to any device over WiFi.

The user interface is very intuitive, drop down menus etc mean there are loads of options, without making you feel overwhelmed. All in all, this is a great download manager and well worth the price.

360 Web Browser application for iphone and ipad

360 Web Browser application for iphone and ipad

This web browser comes about as close as you possibly can to the range of power and features found on your average desktop browser.

To examine all the features this app has to offer would turn this simple review into a veritable novel, so I will focus on a handful of it’s more interesting features. The most immediately useful and easy to grasp feature 360 brings to the table is the full screen browser. When activated, it maximizes the screen real-estate which is a blessing for article reading and photo browsing. The controls in this mode are accessed from two transparent fields at the bottom. These bring up two “arcs” that contain a large number of features like switching tabs, bookmarking, text zoom, and hiding/showing the address bar. These arc take a little time to get use to but after a couple minutes of use I got the hang of it.

That feature alone would make this an interesting candidate for a Safari replacement but that is just scratching the surface. One of the most touted features of 360 is the Firefox sync. This allows you to easily synchronize your bookmarks, open tabs, and history from your desktop to your iPhone. This feature also requires you to install a plugin in Firefox but that installation is quick and easy. Those people who find themselves quickly moving between their office and the road will find this feature a big time saver.

Finally, we come to one of the other big improvements 360 makes over Safari, and that is file downloads. In Safari you are limited to saving images, but in 360, you can download virtually any file and save them to your iPhone for later. You can start multiple downloads in a queue and when finished, can place them in a folder and even compress them with zip. On the other end you are able to extract zip files and also make uploads to your Dropbox account. Unfortunately, 360 lacks the ability to upload to sites from this file manager which I hope is a feature that they implement soon as it would bring us full circle with online file management.
This just scratches the surface of what 360 has to offer. From real tabs, to plugins like Firebug, 360 is a strong contender for full featured browsing on the iOS. Even though the interface seems a bit cluttered at times, the long list of added features makes up for it. If you find yourself frustrated by the limitations of the iPhone’s built in browser, you should give 360 a spin and see if this is just what you are looking for.

iWordJuggle application for iphone & ipad

This is an awesome game.
The app is very simple, easy to get started. One thing missing? A dictionary, so you can immediately look up crazy words..!!!

Word sense, is critical in this game. Here’s how it works: you pick three words from a random list of obscure words, made up of either four, five or six letters. These are put above one another and it’s up to you to make new words within the words you’ve picked. As many as you can, for as many points as you can. You really should try and figure out in advance whether a word will yield you any points before you pick it. Though it can also be such fun to just pick words that tickle your fancy and try and work with those. This is definitely going to be my go to game du jour, as it’s ideal for those minutes spent waiting for someone in a bar/shop/car. And I’m pretty sure my brain is less frazzled than it was, just because of the soothing fonts used and because there is no set time limit on how long you can just sit and ponder your next word. Thanks for that, really makes the experience a lot more soothing and less aggressive!

Mobile DJ Sampler application for ipad, iphone

Mobile DJ Sampler is an easy to use DJ app, providing you, young, eager, aspiring, dj who are always on the gom with a great sampler deck for your iphone or ipad. So now you can mix it up wherever you go. There are six presets to choose from, which you can use just once, or put in a loop. Packed with really cool sounds such as jet engines, sirens, etc. You can download your own samples (just click “add” on the samples screen), straight onto your computer, or use any of the forty samples provided by the app. 32 bit stereo sound, instant sample playback (just tap the really big play button in the middle), easy to hook up to your sound system.

As dj apps go, this one has all the bells and whistles without any of the complicated buttons or hard to use interface. The new version is a lot quicker than the old one, as they removed a lot of samples. Don’t worry, you can download whatever you want from the MobileDJ website for free. Though the app is really easy to use and has a smooth sound, there is one downside: the app has been known to crash, but the developers have tried to fix this in later versions. Please do remember to delete the old version before installing the new one! Other than that: great DJ app, well worth downloading!
